My pi-in-a-keyboard :)

Here it is, then. it's 'finished'. Keyboard is a USB Cherry G81-7000, with the card reader gubbins taken out, a whole load of dremeling, the original USB repurposed as the power lead (with the keyboard connected via a short hacked-up old micro USB cable with the micro end taken off, an internal USB soundcard (even though I never use it), and, um, that's it. Still having problems with power - plug a mouse into the handy built-in hub at the back, and you get sticky keys. That'll either have to be fixed later on, or I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get a powered hub.

Cost (not including the glue gun I bought):

Keyboard - 7 euros.
Raspi - 32 euros
Soundcard - 3? euros

Total - 42 euros. Bargain. It needs some cosmetic work done and finishing off, so the *final* cost will probably go up a bit, but it's usable right now.

I've been wanting to put a Pi in a Keyboard, but all these modern keyboards are flat with no space inside.

What model of Cherry Keyboard is this, and how did you get it that cheap?

Yeah unfortunately these aren't the clacky MX cherry keys everyone gets geekboners for. They're the 'like typing on wet newspaper' MY type. I think they're fine though, and the keyboard itself weighs a ton and is rock solid. Well, it *was* rock solid, until I dremelled the hell out of that back corner.

It's a G81-7000, and *wow*, the prices on ebay UK are insane! They're a lot cheaper on the US ebay.com, though I got mine from the shop, as cheap as I did because it's a czech layout keyboard which doesn't have the ö, ä, and å keys that the locals need (but is close enough to the UK layout to be perfectly okay for me)...

To be honest, the keys are pretty nice to type on. I think whoever came up with the 'wet newspaper' comment was a bit of a snob ;P

There seems to be a whole industry centred around replacement Cherry key-caps on ebay, so you could probably have each one a different color if you wanted to.
