Is it possible (software permitting) to drive a 3D TV with a Pi at the hardware level?
AIUI it requires an HDMI 1.4 interface ?
Can Pi drive a 3D TV ?

I'm not entirely sure, but I believe the Pi cannot. I've never seen it confirmed, but I believe the Pi is HDMI 1.3a.

We support SBS 3D modes. XBMC has support in to handle the signalling and duplicating side-by-side the UI when playing a SBS video file.
