OpenELEC meets Raspberry Pi - part 1 (XBMC)

I installed openelec on my R-Pi, but it doesn't have any video after boot. It seems to boot fine at first, as it displays a splash screen, but afterwards the video remains blank. I'm connecting it to a PAL tv over composite, using jack audio, but maybe it's trying to use hdmi? If so, how would I change this?

I can ssh into the box fine btw, so it does boot.

I've a simple question. I've red that raspberry PI can decode h264 video using its GPU.

But if i have an AVI (with for example divx @ 640x480), can Raspberry decode it? Or there isn't sufficent CPU power?

I won't dive into the technical details of DivX (or Xvid) vs. MPEG4 vs. H.264 as that's covered elsewhere. I can however confirm that the RPi is perfectly capable of playing standard definition DivX/Xvid in .avi and .divx files. It also copes fine with .3gp (and of course .mp4).

OOB for raspbmc worked like a dream for me - I could get iplayer, youtube, videos (but not just audio) streaming from my iphone, video streaming from my pc (SMB) all worked fine. For OpenELEC however, youtube is streaming at 1 frame a minute, audio from iphone I gave up on, etc etc.
I must do some research on it!

Hi,

Is there any chance to get rid of the annoying 'POP' noise at the beginning and end of each mp3? I can hear it only on analog stereo output, HDMI is fine. The same noise occurs at the beginning and end of each movie. I tried to deal with crossfade, but it didn't help too much. Maybe external USB sound card? Whether any cards are supported?

Good morning!
Well I enabled logging. I SSH'd in OK. Can't work out how to get the log file off the SD card. There doesn't appear to be a 'boot' directory! I would of copied the file to that so that I can get to it on my laptop. 1st fail today.
I have succesfully streamed a video from my laptop using smb. Watching videos from youtube is still poor, cpu is @99%, frame rate v low - 5fps, no audio.
Control via my iphone with xbmcRemote app is fail #2 - I can see it, but can't get control. It worked OK with Raspbmc.

Update.
The xbmcRemote app is now working, perhaps I didn't configure the password on the pi and/or the app correctly.
I can stream videos I made using my iphone OK - it takes a while to buffer the video, but once it plays, its OK
I can also stream from youtube on my iphone OK, however streaming from youtube on the openelec pi is still a problem -
I viewed the same SD video, and frame rate is approx 6fps.

2 jobs to do next - install iplayer, 4OD, etc
and see if I can get CEC working - which I have never used or dealt with before, and my TV supports it apparently.

From your log it looks like you are getting a slow playback rate with Youtube because it's using ff-264 to decode rather than the hardware. I've had the same problem with main and baseline profile Youtube videos, high profile decode fine.

From a plugin i wrote which passes the link to urlresolver module which then calls the youtube plugin.
I have also tried calling the youtube plugin directly from my plugin and also had the same problem.

Looks like there is a problem how xbmc decides which player to use. You can check it in the logfile. There you can see that DVDPlayer is choosen and not the OMXPlayer. Have to check that corner.

I received my pi a couple of day ago and I installed both openelec and raspmc(on different cards of course!). Today I tried to play some .ape music files and xbmc couldn't play them! I tried to play them throw samba share. It starts for a second and then nothing. I can see time passing ( in wrong pace) and nothing is hearing. Is there an option I have to enable? I remember in my old xbox I had to enable some additonal codes to be able to play ape files. I can't play the files on both openelec r11371 and raspmc RC3. Any ideas?

monkey music .APE files are not supported by xmbc, there is no decoder for them.
Fortunately the .APE decoder is an open source product so source code for the decoder is available, and the decoder is licence free, so perhaps it can be included in a next release of xmbc..
For now perhaps you should install a player with built in support for such audio files. The free VLC media player supports .APE files, and I think I heard that an ARM linux version exists.
VLC doesn't have support for hardware (GPU) supported decoding for video, but for audio it should probably work.

Thought I'd Say I'm Trying The New 11380 img. It's Working Great. Still A Problem w/some avi files. Not sure why Maybe the video encode. the audio plays good. But, not that big of a deal. I've only found 2 files so far that it won't play. According to Gspot codec appliance it's a divx 3 low-motion encode. Both files. smuggly
