Hi Goffers,
Please could you explain what you mean by "other functions"?
In what context do you mean?

I agree with stevo - in what context are these 'other functions'?
Python is excellent - if you can think it, you can write it. So far thanks to my Pi, I've written:
- A complete Python module to interact with the Pastebin.com API (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/Pastebin/)
Written a Python script to email me the RPi IP upon boot if it discovers it is on a network other than my own (https://gist.github.com/2987424)
Written a Python script to convert audio files of speech, and ask Google to determine what was said (https://github.com/Morrolan/PyGoogSpeech)
I know that this looks like a little self-advertising but it isn't - I've programmed for many years for the hell of it, including releasing an iPhone app on the App Store, but never have I enjoyed programming so much as I have since I started with Python. I've even started going to a monthly Python user group based at the Madlab - the Manchester Digital Laboratory. They even appear to have a RaspberryPi-specific meetup called the Raspberry Jam coming up in a few weeks - http://madlab.org.uk/content/manchester-raspberry-jam-2/.
The possibilities are endless.
