minecraft has been discussed many times and the consensus seems to be "no way" not enough ram, not enough horse power
sorry, thats a definate no...
my desktop pc has 2ghz and 1.25 gigs of ram with an nvidia geforce graphics card... it can barely get 10fps on its lowest settings... yes the r-pi has extremely good graphics but the processor and ram are too low.
The best you can do is go install dos box and some dos games or quake 3... sorry

I'd say it's the other way round - how can a game with the ridiculously simple graphics of Minecraft require a high end PC to run properly?

It's not just the graphics, it's the memory it requires. also, minecraft runs in java which is not going to help.
