Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt

Also getting this error message. Only had Pi up and running for 10mins so not sure if it's linked at all, but it seemed okay until I plugged in my powered external usb hard drive in, this would be recognised for a few seconds then disappear and a new pop up would appear saying a new device has been recognised, this happened over and over again.

Now after a few minutes of booting if I haven't managed to login to the desktop I get the error message, or if I manage to quickly login then the screen will appear frozen as the keyboard and mouse stop working, there doesn't seem to be any power running to my keyboard or mouse as infra red light is not on.

Secretagent - no problems, but you'll have to give me instructions on how to use it, as I'm fairly new to this...

No longer getting this message. I had been using a Logitech cordless desktop EX 100 keyboard but without the cordless mouse (as it seems to eat up batteries). Once I unplugged my usb mouse and went back to the cordless seems to login to the desktop and run fine.

Although just discovered after about 3mins of the ethernet cable being plugged in it all locks up.

Sorry amendment to my post I only get this error when the ethernet cable is plugged in. Is this the same for everyone else? I connect to a Thompson TG585.

Which distro are you using? What's the date of the image?

I have the same issue with archlinuxarm-29-04-2012.img even after the latest kernel upgrade it's the same.

I've got a fix from Naren that hopefully fixes this issue. Should be available from github. e.g. use rpi-update.

If you can boot (e.g. with another keyboard, or no keyboard and ssh in)

You could also try downloading kernel.img from here:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware ... aster/boot

and replace the one on your sdcard with it. Then once booted, run rpi-update.

I've ordered a Trust ClassicLine keyboard which is one that is supposed to work without problems, and I should get it tomorrow. If it does work I'll try the update and see if the other keyboard works with it. I'll report back on what happens.

I tried that kernel from https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware ... aster/boot. I still get an error caused by the keyboard, and it won't boot without it.

Hi, I have the same keyboard problem. My PI will bot fine, until I plug in a keyboard, meaning obviously I cant "login", run rpi-updat or anything else. I have downloaded the new kernal.img from above, but i dont know how to transfer it to my sdhc card. When I try to "drag and drop" it, my PI then wont boot at all. If i use the win32 disk image program to write the new "kernal.img", my PI wont boot at all. I'm not sure what I need to do to get this working. Anyhelp would be very gratefully appreciated.

Yes, insert sdcard into windows machine. You should see the drive show up in explorer. It should contain a number of files, including kernel.img. Just copy/paste or drag'n'drop the newer kernel.img.
No need for win32image.

I can't believe how stupid I have been. I actually tried dragging and dropping just the "kernal.img" file(with no success). It never occurred to me to drag and drop ALL the files. Doh!! lol

Anyway, everything is working perfectly now.... although the password doesn't seem to be "raspberry" for some reason. still, my keyboard is working, so i'm happy!

I have this same problem with a PKBW11 PC World Essentials

This keyboard apparently works on Windows, but it does report itself via plug and play as a 'USB Keykoard'

I'm suspicious that this is a poorly implemented plug and play protocol, and that Windows copes with it better than the pi.

If it is a keyboard firmware issue, it's possible that there are many keyboards on the market with essentially the same firmware in them.

Just updated (using rpi-update).

The PC World Essentials PKBW11 now seems to work.
