Log in problem

Hi,
I got my RasberryPi yesterday and i bought a bootable SD card with Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 raspberrypi tty1 in the memory. After booting i type in "pi" as login, but when i should type the password the prompt just stand still and no letters are typed. Does any one knows what to do? Is the Raspberry kaput?

You won't see your password echoed or replaced with * this is typical behaviour for Linux / Unix login prompts.
The username / password for PI is probably something like: pi / raspberry
