Hiya,
My 10 year old is the techie whizz, not me. I have mac machines. Can I get all the data and downloads we need using a mac PowerBook? Or should we buy a pc?
Can I do this off a Mac?

Thus far, the Mac proves to be a step ahead of Windows for image writing! I'm doing all my Pi setup on my Mac.
..and there is a how-to on the wiki...

And, of course, depending on how new your Mac is, you might already have a SD card slot. My MacBook Pro does.

I concur. I've done everything on my MacBook Pro. If you have an older mac you may need a card reader, but apart from that you should be good. (I wonder if you could put the SD card in a digital camera and use it as a card reader... =O Might be worth a try...)

I get this
feeling when Apple computer users call non-Apple computers PC. I tip my hat to the corporation advertising division.
The operating system of your PowerBook is OS X which has evolved from BSD based UNIX operating systems, meaning it's a "unix-like" operating system. Linux (running on Raspberry Pi) is also a unix-like operating system. You might be surprised by the similarities..!
They'll be capable of working together like Batman and Superman.
