As a follow up, I can confirm that my Pi boots with all the SD cards I mentioned above, including the MicroSD ones, so that myth can be put to rest.
MicroSD cards work fine with the Raspberry Pi.

My Class 10 card works fine too. What I think is happening is that someone fixed the Linux SD card driver not to try to switch to 1.8V (which the Raspberry pi can't do).

According to the commits in GitHub the class 10 SD card issue was fixed on March 17th, comment is "Fix for mmc timeouts when erasing multiple blocks".
