My experience is that they stay there until the recipient opens the message. At that point they are moved to the Sent folder.

thanks itimpi - this is indeed the case. On the plus side you can delete / edit the PM until it is "picked up". Useful if you drink-PM

Yup. Depending on settings it is also possible to edit PMs until they are read by the recipient.
