With slightly older (sorry don't have a date) firmware I was able to boot compressed kernel images. Now when I try and boot such an image the Pi hangs at the "multicolored square" screen.
Booting the uncompressed image from the same kernel build works fine.
latest firmware will no longer boot compressed kernel images

sorry false alarm, the cause of my boot failure was actually SD card corruption.
