Unable to Hear Sound

Bought the PI yesterday, and decided to follow the beginner’s route to getting start, despite having some experience. After a couple of hour Ive been able to successfully install an operating system . Debian, so with the aid of your web site and some of my own know how. Look Nice TO a big raspberry on my new HD TV. Never used the operating system before, but I did find a player and a single song by a group called “silence” I pressed play and used the slider to increase the audio and with a pair of headphones plug in, I waited for the sound. No Audio!!!!…… Eventually editing the Conf. file hdmi_drive=2
Athough there still no sound
Can you suggest a fix …would really like to play mp3 from a Pen Drive
