Infrared input connector and disk acess

Dear friends,

More than educational projects raspberry pi can become too a very useful tool for media center and other purposes.

If you think about dozens of infrared remote commands everybody has home we could use them for replacing keyboards and lowering costs for full solution.

So we need to add such infrared port and if possible an easy way to connect mass storage (sata ?) for building a full media center.

USB External HD will work fine is powered

If you do not have a USB-capable SATA or PATA hard disk, you can use something like

A lot of IR remote controls come with a USB receiver, see for example

Less than $5 worth of parts could be used with a couple of gpio pins to make a lirc interface, or you could buy a usb ir toy for $20: http://www.seeedstudio.com/dep.....?cPath=174

Hi Guys, I have an infrared receiver that came with an HDMI output selector. The HDMI selector is automatic, so I have no use for the infra-red receiver.

The receiver itself has a cable attached leading to a 3.5mm stereo jack plug (3 contacts). Is there any way of re-programming the analogue sound output jack socket on the Pi so that I can plug this IR sensor in?

I would not get my hopes up! That socket is an audio out and will probably have ac coupling back to the source chip. The IR dongle needs to connect to an input somewhere and have volts supplied to it on one of the three pins of its plug.

I've had a reply from Gert on this and it's not possible. He did say that I might be able to get it working via the GPIO pins though.

Before you get too far disassembling your auto HDMI switch, I have one of those too and I was very annoyed to learn that some devices always send an HDMI signal even when they are "off" (notable my PVR and DVD player, but not my Xbox360). This really throws a wrench in the "auto" selection feature. So unless you plan on manually swapping between devices I wouldn't remove the ir part of the device
