The problem with the Raspberry Pi foundation was that there is a want for small cheap and powerful computers. This is evident by the amount of demand demonstrated. At the start I bet you guys were just thinking small school based requirements?
I am waiting for the day that students are given one each by their school, or foundation's (buy one, gift one) when it all settles down. Then the fun will begin.
But who knew? No-one had produced a tiny cheap device like this so no-one knew that the demand would be so high. Anyone who says otherwise is guessing with 20:20 hindsight.
