Configurar resolución monitor VGA con adaptador HDMI

Hola

Estoy usando una raspberry pi con un monitor VGA, para ello uso este adaptador HDMI-VGA: http://www.pccomponentes.com/cable_adap ... audio.html

1º probé el adaptador en mi portátil con Linux Mint y no funciono y me pegue un susto del copón
pero luego lo probé en la Raspberry arrancando NOOBS y si lo pillaba (uufff)
sin embargo intente instalar Raspbian directamente en la sd, sin noobs, usando ImageWriter pero entonces tampoco reconocía la pantalla :_
Así que al final instale Raspbian a través de NOOBS y si puedo usar la pantalla, pero a la resolución más baja.

cuando xrandr me dice:

976x736 0.0*


¿como puedo mejorar la resolución? Al menos debería poder poner 1368x768

Pero creo que no lo estoy entendiendo bien
he probado con hdmi_mode=16 y algún valor más pero no ha servido

acabo de poner
hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=4

y aunque eso se supone que es una resolución 720p lo que me ha puesto es 1136x592

Parece que ya esta conseguido:
hdmi_driver=2
hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=4
disable_overscan=1

la siguiente resolución que seria
hdmi_mode=16 1080p 60Hz
no me la pilla, pero bueno, al menos así llego a 720p aunque se que ese monitor puede con más, pero no veo como se le puede dar un valor intermedio
