Recording sound

I want to record sound from 2 mics and use information about the sound to estimate the direction which the sound came from. I know I can't do this with digital GPIO, so is it best to A) get an A/D converter and connect it to raspberry pi through GPIO or B) Get a USB audio dongle. Will I be able to get a reading of amplitude and frequency of the sound or just amplitude? What are the advantages of each? Thanks.
