MagPi Issue 10 crashes iPad.

I tried to download MagPi issue 10 to my original iPad a couple of times now, and I am finding it crashes the iPad. The first download into Newsstand wouldn't open at all, the second download allows me to read the first pages up to the BASH scripting section, then it crashed again, and now crashes every time I try and open it. Presumably it is trying to get to the page it crashed on before. All previous issues are working fine.

Anyone else having a similar problem? Or is it perhaps because of my ancient iPad?

I have been using the Newsstand version of MagPi, which until now has been fine.

Hi,

Did you download the PDF, or are you viewing it using the html5 viewer at Issuu?

This month's issue is a good bit bigger than previous ones. The team is aware of this and it could cause problems for readers (maybe 256Mb PIs)

I don't normally use the newstand apps, but I have tested it in newstand on the iPad 2 and can confirm that it all works perfectly.

There are things that the Original Flavor iPads (and even iPad 2s) can't handle, and some of them tend to be larger-sized documents like PDFs, web pages that seem to have the same volume of data as all of the content from Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Brittanica, combined, on them (mostly in the form of ads), and other miscreant humongous collections of "data". There are even apps that are so complex and large that they can't effectively run on the older iPads, often due to the limited RAM and slower CPUs and GPUs on the older models (e.g., iBooks created via Author, some of the music performance apps, heavy-duty 3-D graphics-based games, etc.).

I'll try the MagPi Issue 10 in Newstand on my Original Flavor iPad tonight when I get home. There were issues with early versions of MagPi on Issuu, and maybe Newstand hits limitations on the early iPads with large/complex enough publications.

MagPi is not as large as some other magazines I have loaded into Newsstand before.

Sure enough, about half a dozen pages into MagPi Issue 10 on my trusty ol' Original Flavor 64 GB iPad, Newstand crashed to the desktop. There's definitely something going wrong somewhere and I believe it's a RAM exhaustion issue as the original iPads only have 512 MBs of RAM.

So it is an iPad issue, and not only me.

I'll send them an email when I get home tonight, to let them know (if they don't already), and maybe they can address the issue. It's not very friendly for the app to crash in that fashion, even worse that it is irrecoverable, because once it crashes on a page, there is no way to stop it trying to load that page on the next run, except by deleting the issue and re-downloading it.

I am also experiencing this issue on my iPad Mini with Newsstand.

Many thanks.

Thanks folks. I've mailed the MagPi team about this.

Hi,

Would it be possible for you to try issue 11? We updated the templates of issue 11 last night, to try to remove this problem. If it works, we can update issue 10 too.

Thanks and best regards,

Will

I use a nexus7 and downloaded magpi 11.

If l use Abode PDF reader it will not show any text on pages with a picture header eg page 4 with RPI heat, but all is OK when using Document viewer.

Magpi 10 is similar.

I'll download and try again if you've modified it.

Abode now works OK with the latest download :) , document viewer shows the doc OK but does seem slower than before.

I note its also down to 19mb, unlike the first version which was 39mb similar to magpi 10. All previous versions were <= 25mb

I've just tried issue 11, and it is even worse, I don't get to read any pages at all.

I emailed them a couple of times, and they suggested just using the downloaded PDF in iBooks instead. Well if that is the 'fix', what is the point of having a Newsstand app' in the first place.

I'll just not bother any more me thinks, there's plenty of other material around that doesn't crash my admittedly aged iPad.

The Newsstand app is also apart from not working any more, a little deficient in another area. If like me you were keeping all issues on the iPad that contained useful information, unlike all other Newsstand apps I have used, when there is a particular issue you want to remove, you can't with MagPi, as it only has a button to delete ALL downloaded issues. So you had to delete all and re-download the one wanted ones again.

I find that it just crashes on the second from last page now? An improvement maybe...
