The volume starts at max and I assume you are expected to use speaker volume control to change volume to taste however with headphones there is no volume control and the default maximum 0db is just too low most of the time.

What's the fix?

Not sure this is the only way, but you can set a default volume boost in the volume menu while playing any file. When you change the settings there's an option to 'make this the default'

As far as I can tell there is no volume boost, it only goes up to 0db so the only option this thing gives you is to make the video play quieter. Please someone tell me I'm wrong. The only purpose of XMBC is to play media files and Its blowing my mind that it won't let you amplify the volume let alone set up a basic EQ profile.

Yeah, I was thinking of volume amplification, which is not quite the same thing (but can have much the same effect)
