I'm guessing there must be a way to load a bootloader from the SD card, but then boot to a USB stick or drive. Does anyone know how to do this?

Yes, it is possible to have a few boot files on the SD card (the contents of /boot) and then boot to a USB disk/memory stick/network drive.

You need to copy the contents of the "/" partition to the USB drive (I guess that would be /dev/sda1), then edit the cmdline.txt file in /boot on the SD card to say "root=/dev/sda1".

Better guides are on these forums somewhere, but my search-fu is failing due to othe rissues atm.

Thanks for the info. I'll look through the site to see what I can find.
