Hello,
So I have downloaded the Pi OS off the RaspBerry Pi web site and put the img on to an SD.
I have edited the config file for functions i need and been through the setup ok.
I have also edited (sudo nano etc/inittab) and so pi does auto login in...
Currently I startx manual, but I'll auto start this on next boot.

Problem I am having is that I am new to linux and keep messing up the system (see my other post) and then have to re img the sd again and lose all the above setup etc. So is there a way I can archive/copy my SD back to my PC so I can recover it to back to the point where I was?

You can do it with the Win32DiskImager program mentioned on the Downloads page,

just use Read instead of Write.

You might have some issues restoring a backup to a different SDcard due to the size.... even if the new card is the same size.

I had to deal with this with a friends RPi the other night and found that I could shorten the image file using Win DD. I explained what I did in the post http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=19562&p=217078#p217078

Basically I did:
o Backed up original image with Win32diskimager
o Created a slightly smaller version using Win DD
o Was able to write the new smaller image to a new SDcard without any issues.

Attempts to read directly using the Win DD from the SDCard to disk have not worked or I would simply replace that process with the backup process using Win32diskimager.

Really hard to provide any comment when you provide basically no info.

such as:
o Is the SDCard Loaded?
o Is this error happening when you start Win32diskimager?
o Is this error happening when you select the file to read to?
o is this error happening when you click Read to read from the SDcard to the filename you selected?

Have you tried to reboot your computer and tried again? Some computers have problems with SDCards when they are inserted over and over and require the computer to be reset.

Are you using an external card reader or an internal card reader that came with your computer?

Lots of possible issues but you have provided no input as to where you are, what you have tried or what steps you have taken.

I just download lastest version 0.6 of Win32DiskImager.exe
and when I try to read the sd I get error:
An error occurred when attempting to read data from handle.
Error2: The system cannot find the file specified.

I tried this a few times and each time it produces Temp.img of differening size's and it then just seem to going on reading from the sd card but does not show any progress.

I think we can close this issue as problems seemed to have been cause by the USB
"All in 1 Mini Card Reader"
Basically this little gaget is one of those multi storage type (SD, Micro SD etc) card to USB devices.
It works fine for native XP file reading and writing, but have some issue with Win32DiskImager.
It seem to work for writing to SD ok, if you ignor the error messages, but does not work for reading an SD image back into the PC.

I have tested both reading and writting images on my laptop that has built in SD support and it seems to work fine....

In case anyone comes by this tread looking to fix a problem with Win32diskimager READING an SD card to perform a backup and getting a CRC error, the SD card may need an fsck. Put the card back in the Pi, boot it, then:

shutdown -rF now

This will force an fsck and might fix the CRC error.
