Hello all
I have this http://www.adafruit.com/products/922 running on a raspberry pi with raspbian. How do you make a vertical pipe?

What happens when you push SHIFT \ ?
If not correct then you need to run the keyboard setup in the internationalization options:
sudo raspi-config
Go here for my RPi writeup. Basic config, Serial Port add-on etc:

I would try one of the generic keyboards but more importantly choose English (US) in the next menu.

If he's using a US layout keyboard. What if he isn't? I press shift \ to get | but if I set mine to US a whole load of other characters will be wrong - mine is English (UK).

Once you select a keyboard, make sure you choose "Keyboard = English (US)" for both "Country of Origin" and "Keyboard Input". Also unselect the default locale (en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8) and select "en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8". Be careful, as I have had some of those questions come up more than once during the raspi-config process.

Thanks all for helping. I had to restart the computer after I changed the settings.
