I'm wondering if instead of using an external hard drive to store movies, i could use my iPod instead?

You can use any USB Mass Storage device. That includes the vast majority of MP3 players, though a few of them don't implement UMS. Not sure if iPods do.

The "non-fancy" iPods can all be mounted as disks. This means all the Classic/Original, Shuffle, and pre-super-tiny Nano, I believe.
{sig} Setup: Original version Raspberry Pi (B, rev1, 256MB), Dell 2001FP monitor (1600x1200), 8GB Class 4 SD Card with Raspbian and XBMC, DD-WRT wireless bridge

Well, that works a treat for me because it just so happens that I have the " pre-super-tiny Nano " :D

Thanks for the help!
