Folks. I almost fell out of bed this morning when I found out about this.
David Braben is doing a remake of Elite, using kickstarter to fund it.

Played Elite on BBC, and the game that has most reminded me of it since was Freelancer - this new Elite sounds like a souped up version of that - and I really like Freelancer!

I can see this being quite fun....
Soon to be unemployed software engineer currently specialising in camera drivers and frameworks, but can put mind to most embedded tasks. Got a job in N.Cambridge or surroundings? I'm interested!

I just used the Kickstarter contact link to very politely ask David Braben to release an RPi version - you never know he might if he gets enough requests.
