Is it possible to connect two Pis together via the serial port lines on the header? Obviously connecting other equipment to a Pi this way requires level shifting etc but connecting two Pis together should not need any such?

Ethernet is probably the easiest way to connect them.

But if you are determined to connect them together directly, you will be able to, but it will require you to write code to act as the communication, and do some soldering to get a small circuit together, connection the GPIO.

All sounds like too much hassle to me. ;)

I think you can connect the without levelshifter via SPI or if you need longer distances (more than side by side) try with serial to RS232 chips from Maxim. Look at Gerts examplecode for the Gertboard inthe Downloadsection.
