I'd like to get a chat client working in debian squeeze... mostly for facebook chat, but google chat would be good too. I use empathy in ubuntu and I've tried pidgin, but I am not sure either of those would work well on the RPi and I wonder if there is a good command line client available. GUI is fine too, I guess, if it works.

I guess http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/WhatIsLibpurple might be a good starting point?

Nothing beats the irssi+bitlbee combination. Especially so in terms of speed and resources needed to work efficiently. Also, you get extra geek-swagger credits for running command line apps.
