Coloured splash screen woes

Hi all,
Wondering if someone can come to my rescue.
I can't get my Pi to boot. I'm stuck on the coloured splash screen.
I've read around the common non booting guides:
http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting# ... F_Start-up
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=58151

However, I can't seem to make any progress.

I've got the model B Pi. I know my power supply is sufficient and I've tried the latest version of NOOBS on several different SD cards, ensuring they're formatted correctly and also that the NOOBS files are coped over correctly.

When I plug the power in to my Pi, I get a constant red PWR light and one flash of the green ACT light.

Even without the SD card in, I can still get the coloured splash screen.

I know one solution is adding the "boot_delay=1" to the to the config.txt file. However, I can't find that file anywhere on my SD card.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

Thanks
Dave

That's impossible, without the SD-card the PI cannot load the "BIOS" code that creates this GPU test pattern you call a "splash screen".

If it boots until the test pattern, that means it doesn't see the first ARM boot code.

NOOBS itself doesn't use the config.txt file, it is only until it creates raspbian that the config.txt file is created, but before that happens you can edit the version that will be created using the editor built into noobs itself.

Sorry - my mistake.
Yeah, of course nothing without the SD card.

Still none the wiser why things aren't booting at all.

You can create a config.txt file on the SD card in the recovery section... It will get loaded...

Just create that one file with that one line and see if it makes a difference... I'd be very interested if it does because we've seen this problem recently (although not very high rate)...

Is the SDRAM Micron (Big M on the top of the processor chip)

Thanks, There is a big M on the processor.
to fill in some blanks along the way...
This is a new version 2 Pi that was supplied with an 8mb Sd card and pre installed NOOBS
I am using a VGA monitor with a HDMI - VGA adaptor (this is a powered version)

I was having the coloured screen issue and not getting past that point. I tried a different power supply (both were 1A) and the pi booted to the Install OS page. I selected Raspbian and it appeared to go ok - to 100%, Clicked ok and the screen went blank, stayed blank for 5 mins till I pulled the power. (all the time I only had the solid red power lamp illuminated). When the power was restored the coloured screen came back and nothing else. Retried several times but no joy.

Second attempt was to reformat the SD card and download the latest NOOBS. repeated the above and now back to where I was before - rainbow screen.

Thanks

OK, it seems this is the same issue as the hardware I've got on my desk at PiTowers, so it's nothing you're doing wrong. It would be very useful if you could try the config.txt thing for NOOBS (and the Raspbian OS as well, if you get into NOOBS, select the Raspbian OS you have installed and then click "Edit config.txt" button)

Ok you'll have to go a bit slower with me, sorry.

So
1, config.txt file. I create one and save it in the recovery section but what line of txt goes in it?

2, Will I need to reformat my SD card and copy the NOOBS across again before doing this? Or will it just work if I put it in the recovery section?

Thanks

I'd start by ensuring that all of NOOBS was copied to your SDCard (there's some other threads where some hidden files get missed by Windows copy).

Hi,

I am having the same problem, bought a kit from amazon.co.uk that came with a 4gb SD card with NOOBS (the seller is NEW IT newit.co.uk - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI ... os_product) before xmas as a present for my nephew, he tried to boot and got stuck at the multi-coloured screen, having a few times it was clear it wasn't the sd card fitting. Tried to download the latest NOOB 1.3.3 and used that and could get it to boot to NOOB, which I then installed Raspbian, this gave the NOOB message about successfully installing and clicking "ok" it just black screened, I left it for 10 minutes and then removed and re-applied the power and again it stuck at the multi-coloured screen.

I did some reading and saw some references to boot_delay=1, so to the BOOT partition, I added that to the config.txt and also uncomment the first hdmi option in config.txt (someone else suggested this might also be contributing), rebooted and this still gave the multi-coloured screen.

Done some more reading and founds someone mentioning that NOOBS 1.3.3 needs an SD Card bigger than 4gb for Raspbian, so popped out to buy a 16gb SD Card today, repeated the initialisation of SD card, copied over NOOBS 1.3.3 and it booted again, installed Raspbian, again it hung after clicking "ok", after 10 or so minutes I removed and re-applied power and the raspberry hung at the multi-coloured screen, I repeated the SD card format again (on my mac) and copied NOOBS again and re-installed again this time setting the boot_delay=1, again it hung after clicking "ok" to confirm that the install of raspbian had finished and removing and re-applying the power returned the raspberry to the multi-coloured screen.

At this point it feels like there is either something wrong with the hardware or something wrong with raspbian. There is an M on the processor (with a circle over it), could this be related to the issue seen at "PiTowers"? I have attached a photo of the chip to confirm that is the "M" you are referring to.

Thanks,
Jason.

This sounds just like the issue I'm having and I posted elsewhere so would be interested in the solution.
Just learning the way....

OK, I have re read the whole post now and created the config.txt file with 'boot_delay=1' in, saved it in the recovery section without reformatting and reinstalling NOOBS, it and this got me past the rainbow screen, Raspberry icon in top left & a pile of txt rolled up and stayed there ending in 'more>' no flashing curser and no keyboard activity. powered down after a couple of mins and rebooted. This time I went past the rainbow screen but its now just giving me a black screen - no curser.

Hi Gordon,
No joy with this I'm afraid, that file still doesn't seem to be getting me past this dreaded colour splash.

Hi,
Just for the avoidance of any doubt here, I wanted to check that all the files are being extracted and copied over correctly. (I've used a few different extraction tools and operating systems and getting the same each time). Hopefully, I'm not missing anything

From NOOBS v1.3.3 I'm extracting the following onto my SD card.
(nine files, two folders). Not listing any files in either folder

defaults (folder)
os (folder)
bootcode.bin
BUILD-DATA
INSTRUCTIONS-README
recovery.cmdline
recovery.elf
recovery
recovery.rfs
RECOVERY_FILES_DO_NOT_EDIT
riscos-boot.bin

Does that all look correct?

Download a new copy of NOOBS 1.3.3 (or NOOBS lite) from http://raspberrypi.org/downloads
Unzip it directly onto your SDCard (or if you unzip to a Windows folder, then ensure you copy everything including hidden files)
Try that in the RPi.

Here's a file listing of NOOBS 1.3.2

I'm listing 87 files and 16 folders, including the config.txt I created and this seems to be consistant with the unzipped folder. Is it likely the unzipped folder won't have all the files?

OK Last post for now,
I have reformatted the SD card, coppied all the latest NOOBS onto it, created the config.txt file with the one line in it as previous post above. Started ok and gets past the rainbow screen. Get to select the OS and installs raspbian to 100% and leaves me with the 'OS installed correctly' message. Click ok and the Pi reboots and sits back with a black screen and just stays there...... and stays there.....

Just checked the files and sizes from the post above and mine are the same. Thanks

Chalky

I'll give this another go.today.
The one thing I haven't tried is extracting directly to the SD card. I've always extracted to a folder elsewhere and moved files across.

I'll report back.

OK, adding boot_delay=1 definitely seems to have an effect, but there are two places to add it...

First as you have done to the primary partition (RECOVERY) but after installing Raspbian, you need to hold down shift to re-enter NOOBS, move the OS selection back down to Raspbian and click the edit config button... Then add the boot_delay=1 to that as well...

Be interested in how it works...

Just for people to understand, this is definitely a known bug, currently we do not know whether it is a software or hardware problem and I need to get back to work tomorrow to see if I can find out!

Sorry, we'll be working on this full time until we find the problem

Hi, I've been following this post with interest as I have the same issues. Eventually having tried all the things on this post I downloaded Raspian on its own and used Win32Diskmanager to install the image. This didnt seem to work, but then I edited the config file and added the line as advised.the Pi has booted upto to a gui entitled "Raspberry Pi Software Configuration Tool (raspi-config).
What do I do next ?

I have been suffering exactly the same issue as the people on this post, but I have finally got mine working, hopefully this will help you to get going to.

First I downloaded the Raw Raspian image here http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads and unpacked it
I also downloaded the installer here http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/ and unpacked it
I formatted the SD card using the advised SD formatter
Used the Diskimager to install the image on the SD Card using this guide http://elinux.org/RPi_Easy_SD_Card_Setup
Once installed I then edited the config.txt file on the SD Card and added boot_delay=1
Inserted the SD card, the HDMI and the keyboard into the Pi and powered up. It took a couple of seconds, but then scrolling text on the screen that ended with the Raspberry Pi config screen.
I then followed the guide here to configure the Pi and it then rebooted to a Rasperry desktop gui

hope this helps

Hi all,
Paul's method did work.
I've been able to download the raw image of Raspbian, copy it on to my SD card using Win32DiskImager and then, by adding in boot_delay=1 to the config files, it booted.

I assume, given I've made this much progress - as have others - that there's some kinda problem with NOOBS v1.3.3?
