I am following an article to build a NAS with my raspberry pi.
I am at a point where I have to mount the usb hard drives but there is no /dev/sda1 etc in the /dev directory. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

Hmm! Does 'dmesg' return anything relevant after you plug the drive in?

(Just in case you are not aware: The USB sockets on a RPi do not supply enough power for a hard disk. You must use a self powered drive or a powered USB hub.)

dmesg does not show anything relevant and I am using a dual hard drive case that plugs into AC.
The sdxx does not show up in /dev and it should.

dmesg should have some lines about the USB drive being plugged in.

I assume you have checked the drive case and USB cable working with another computer.

The hard drives work on my PC.
What am I supposed to see in dmesg?
I see a lot of usb stuff but the only thing I recognize is my keyboard.

Several lines like this:

Code: Select all

If you issue the dmesg command a short time after plugging in the USB drive, the corresponding lines should be the at the very end of the output.

I plugged in a flash drive and I can see /dev/sda and /dev/sda1.
I am unsure how to mount the flash drive.
I tried mount -t /dev/sda1 /mnt/disk1
I got a message saying must specify file type so I tried the above with msdos added after the -t
I have worked with unix and Linux for several years but have been away from it for a couple of years.
I feel like a rookie. I was trying to post my dmesg. I saved it as a text file.

Try
Code: Select all
mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/disk1

(The /mnt/disk1 needs to exist before the mount command is issued.)

Well, I still can't mount the drives but they are now showing up in /dev sda1 and sdb1 and sda and sdb.
I do have a workaround though. If I run the graphical interface, it detects the hard drives when I run file manager. From then on , until I reboot, I can access the drives. I installed an ftp program, so now I have a NAS through ftp. Not exactly what I had in mind but it works. I will try and fix it properly later.
Thank you very much for your help.
PS the sda1 you pointed out was from the flash drive and the flash drive is now unreadable in windows.
I have lots of flash drives so I should be ok. Thanks again. Rick

You seem to have keyboard, mouse and USB hard drive connected simultaneously, so I assume you also have a USB hub that you haven't mentioned before. Please explain exactly how all those are wired up and full details of how the RPi and the hub are powered..

Try booting without the hard drive's USB cable plugged in. After the RPi has fully booted, issue the dmesg command and note the last line. Then plug in the drive's USB cable and issue the dmesg command again. Post here the new lines that appear.

I do not have a usb hub installed.
IU unplugged my mouse and plugged in the hard drives.
I navigated the GUI using the keyboard.
Anyway, the problem is solved.
I used a different SD card and redid everything and it is now working about 80 percent.
I can read the drives as root but not as a regular user.
When I try to change permissions for the mount directories disk1 and disk 2
I get a message saying read only file system and the permissions do not change.
I am doing some reading.

I had previously formatted them NTFS but they are both blank so it doesn't matter what fs I use.
If you want me to change the fs you'll have to walk me through unless I can use fdisk.
Any help or ideas on the permissions thing? Rick

I know this is a long thread but I can now mount both hard drives. I can see them on my windows pc.
I can read them. I cannot write to them. When I try to change the permissions on the raspberry pi, using chmod, I get a message that says READONLY FILE SYSTEM!
How do I write to the drives.

I also installed ProFtp and can only log on the Pi using the user pi
I created another user called rick and gave root permissions but I cannot even log on.
Once this permissions problem is solved, I will be happy.
Rather than mock me, I could use some real help.

If they are formatted as NTFS, then you have to make sure you mount them as ntfs-3g if you want to be able to write to them. The simple 'ntfs' driver (without the -3g added) only supports read access.

So I have to mount them using the command:
mount -t -ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/disk1

Is this correct?
