Allied Electronics Order- is it real?

Mar 3 I ordered a Raspberry pi from Allied Electronics. I received a confirmation email, and I got a "Be patient" email Mar 29, and I'm being patient.

But here's the odd thing. The confirmation email contains a link to the order at alliedelec.com, and the link doesn't work (it goes to a page that says 'no orders for this user'). I've set up a login account at allied with the same email I used for the order, and they show no orders. The confirmation also contains a listing of the order, with a part number for the RPi, and the part number has a link to the alliedelec.com site. The link brings up a 'no such content page'.

http://www.alliedelec.com/search/produc ... U=70229569

However I did find this very similar link on google, which has a nice pic of a raspi:

http://www.alliedelec.com/search/produc ... U=70229569

So, what's going on? Is this normal - it seems very odd to me. Did they take my order and now they aren't going to do anything? Or are the raspi orders now in some kind of underground database at allied, not showing up on the web page?

I want to make it clear that I don't mind waiting, I know lots of people are. I am just wondering If I'm waiting on an order which is now lost ( I didn't get a 'be patient' email at the end of April...)

You are presumably in the same situation as the other 340,000 of us ! As only 10,000 have so far been built and distributed....

Both companies are keeping their RPi ordering separate from their 'standard' system - partly because that is based on supplying businesses, in quantitiy, but also 'from stock' in most cases.... it wasn't designed for the delays caused by the initial level of demand etc.

They are 'effectively' treating your 'order' as an expression of interest, as explained on these forums/front page at regular intervals, and with RS from periodic emailings.

WHEN you're order/expression of interest is imminently suppliable from incoming stock, you are then being sent a specific, individual email, with a link to the Rpi order page ... use carefullly .... to misquote 'Allo 'Allo (a UK Comedy Series) 'I'll say this only once' ... or as in Mission Impossible ... 'this page will destruct in 5 seconds' .. as soon as you have used it once. Then your Pi will be sent and card charged.

75,000 more (each?) are due into stock shortly ... I too hope one is mine 8-)

Thanks for the answer, but I'm not really any less confused. On Mar 6 I got such an email from Newark/Element14 -
"We're thrilled to hear of your interest - We've held your place in line so all you have to do is place your order".
Previously to placing the Allied order, I had filled in an 'express interest' form on one of those sites. When I got this Mar 6 email, I disregarded it since I had since placed an order -- with credit card, and shipping info -- on the Allied site, and received a confirmation email, and assumed that this Allied order was in good standing, and thus placing an order with Newark/Element14 would be a duplicate. I had also received a similar 'thanks for pre-registering' email on Mar 5 from Newark/Element14. Are you saying that these emails from Newark/Element14 were actually generated in response to the "confirmed" Allied order? And that I needed to respond to that in order to complete the Allied order?

I haven't seen an indication that Allied had converted my order to an EOI and was planning to send me an email to prompt me to actually place the order. Indeed, the Mar 29 email from Allied says "As soon as the Raspberry Pi is available from RS, we will begin to receive the device in batches and fill your preorders in the order that they were placed." And I have a confirmation email with an order number - but unfortunately no confirmation that this order exists in their database. There is very little discussion of Allied on the raspberry pi news & forums (as opposed to element14/Premier Farnell/Newark) which is why I'm asking this.

The guys at RS/Allied (doesn't all this branding houpla do your head in?) have a dedicated support email address at raspberrypi@rswww.com - it's worth giving that a go if you're still confused.

Thank you liz!

Also, I just tried adding a comment to the most recent news item - and I got "Error 1: Click back and type in the password." Needless to say, I had. I have tried copying the password in, and typing it in. I have managed to put comments on Raspi news items in the past, but most of the time I get this error and give up. Is there a trick to it?

@ Gregsmith
I managed to do an actual pre-order with Allied on March 4 and when I log in to my account the order does show up, still in pending status but at least its there. My part number is 70229569 but they obviously changed their website and order process since March as that part no longer shows up under their product search. You should contact Mike at RS to ask why your account doesn't show your order information.

Update - I got this reply from Allied on May 15, thanks for the contact email :

"There has been some confusion regarding the status of Raspberry Pi preorders recently. Here is some information to address a few of your questions.
Your Raspberry Pi preorder is a valid order and has been placed in the queue to be fulfilled. Despite rumors, none of the preorders have been converted to an “expression of interest” or anything similar.
The process is still the same as previously described. Since your device has already been ordered, you will not receive an invitation to purchase the Raspberry Pi. Instead, you will simply receive a notification once your preorder has shipped.

I contacted Allied Electronics about my order because nothing came up. Someone there updated my order and now I can see the order date and an invoice. Its been 95 days now and still no computer. I requested a little info on when they may be sending it. I guess I am waiting in line. If the factory is only making 1 thousand of these a week, it could be years before I get mine. I see people are selling them on ebay for bids of over $80 or buy now for $125.

I thought I saw a comment somewhere that manufacturing volumes are now thousands per day and still being ramped up. That seems to tie in with what news is made available about the total number shipped that slips out every so often.

There was about a 2 month delay (March and April) before volume shipments took off, but they do now seem to be going out at a considerable rate.

I was in contact with Allied Electronics today on an unrelated matter, but checked on my order at the same time. I ordered on the night of March 5, and my order status is 'Backordered - NO ESTIMATED DELIVERY DATE'

Maybe I shouldn't even think of getting my hopes up.

...And I received an email from Allied early on June 28, informing me the order had shipped; and it arrived in good order later the same day. Great, I'm very pleased. Now I need about 4 more....

... and on reviewing my credit card bill I find Allied have charged me twice, for a total of over $110. Two different amounts, oddly enough. Will contact them about it...

Upon calling Allied, was just told that the CDN$45 charge on my card was for the item, and the $64 charge was for shipping. It was shipped "UPS super saver" from Texas (OK, it did arrive next day, although after waiting almost 4 months, that made little difference to me ). So, I'm not in a hurry to order another one.

Anyhow, the fellow who answered the phone acknowledged that the cost seemed a little high and is forwarding the issue to their Rpi specialist.

I placed an order with element14/Newark in April and had not heard anything from them. I got online and gave them the order number and they said it's due to ship at the end of August.

The guy at work who told me about the RPi said he got his in about a month ago but hasn't had the chance to play with it. He gave me his about 2 weeks ago if I give him mine when it comes in (Pi it forward, ). He ordered from RS/Allied as soon as he heard about it (not sure when). He got an invite e-mail to order and he said he had it within two weeks.

On a whim I went to the RS/Allied site and signed up as 'interested'. I got an e-mail within about 1-2 days inviting me to place an order. So I placed an order. That was about 3 days ago. When it comes in I'll 'Pi it back' ( ) to the guy who gave me his.

Unfortunately the one he gave me must be cursed - I haven't had a chance to play with it either. I'm still gathering peripherals.
